HARRISBURG (July 11, 2011) - The Pennsylvania Bar Association has named Janis M. Leftridge of Harrisburg as the association's first diversity officer.
Leftridge, who has an extensive background in human resources and diversity development, will be responsible for overseeing and facilitating the PBA's efforts to improve diversity within the association and Pennsylvania's legal profession.
"Janis Leftridge's experience, professionalism and leadership will be critical to the PBA's efforts to ensure that we are a bar association and a legal profession for everyone," said PBA President Matthew J. Creme Jr. of Lancaster.

Leftridge previously worked as the senior director for business diversity for the Harrisburg Regional Chamber of Commerce and CREDC, as a human relations consultant for Bayer Corp. in Pittsburgh and as a human relations manager for McCormick & Co. in Sparks, Md. She also served as the assistant director of law admissions for the University of Baltimore School of Law.
Leftridge will work with the PBA Diversity Team, Board of Governors and senior staff to develop and execute the PBA's diversity programs and will work with the state's legal community to provide resources and tools in support of diversity goals, objectives and initiatives.
Leftridge earned a bachelor's degree in sociology from Morgan State University in Baltimore, a master's degree in social work from the University of Maryland at Baltimore and a juris doctorate from the University of Baltimore School of Law.

Current Focus: Ms. Leftridge is the Senior Director for Business Diversity for the Harrisburg regional Chamber & CREDC since April 2004.Her primary responsibilities are providing resources and services that will enable to increase the capacity and strengthen the infrastructure of minority and woman-owned businesses to facilitate access and opportunities to competitively and successfully participate in the economic development and growth throughout the region.She is also responsible to increase awareness and inclusion of women and minority-owned businesses in all Chamber activities; increase the use of resources and services though proactive identification and outreach; serve as a catalyst for building relationships between larger corporations and women and minority-owned businesses throughout the region and is creating a Business Diversity Development Program, serving as a coordinator and monitor between program participants.
Professional Background: Ms. Leftridge joined the Chamber in April of 2004 in the newly created position of Senior Director for Business Diversity.Her professional career has evolved from her first position with the Baltimore City Department of Social Services, then accepting a newly created Minority Law Counselor position of at the University of Baltimore School of Law, where she was promoted to Assistant Director of Law Admission.She then moved into private industry by accepting a position with McCormick and Company (the spice people) as their Employment Supervisor in the Retail Division.During her time at McCormick, she held Human Resources positions in each of its 3 Divisions.After more than 11 years with McCormick, she accepted a position as HR Consultant in the Corporate EEO/AA unit at the US headquarters of Bayer Corporation in Pittsburgh, PA.Here she served as a corporate-wide consultant regarding a wide range of EEO and AA issues.
Education: Janis has a Bachelor's Degree in Sociology from Morgan State University; a Master's of Social Work Degree from the University of Maryland, School of Social Work and Community Planning; and a Juris Doctorate Degree from the University of Baltimore School of Law.
