December 5, 2003 marked 40 years of service to Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., by Dr. Janice G. Kissner, who served as the 17th International President from 1974-1980.Dr. Kissner was the youngest International President to serve Zeta (taking office in her 20's and dubbed "Grand Jan").In 1976; Dr. Kissner took Sorority to new heights by expanding Zeta to the Island of St. Croix in the Caribbean.During Dr. Kissner's tenure the following events occurred: Zeta adopted its current slogan: "A Community-Conscience, Action-Oriented Organization;" The National Education Foundation (was incorporated in 1975); the Stork's Nest Program (through Dr. Kissner's influence and position with the March of Dimes) enjoyed rapid growth (25 Nests in 1974 to 80 Nests in 1980, with one in Africa); the National "Distinguished Service Award" was established, the first National Undergraduate Retreat (which is now annual), established the National "Pledge's Bill of Rights," (formulated the first non-hazing policy in Greekdom, which has been adopted by the National Pan-Hellenic Council, Inc.) and had the largest growth in Zeta under one administration (Zeta went from 238 to 508 chapters.)
