Jan Jourdain has been Systems/Media Librarian at Amherst College since July 1998.
She is currently Chair of the Five College Libraries ILS Selection Committee (ILSSC); her experiences on the committee form the basis of her presentation.
Jan's qualifications for chairing the ILSSC are varied.
professional library career as a science and technology cataloger at a large state university, where she
participated in the implementation of its first ILS
, NOTIS, during the early-1980s.
Then as a physical sciences and engineering librarian, she served as lead implementer, and later system administrator, during the conversion of a federal technical library from a two-card, totally manual system to Sirsi during the late 1980s.
returned to academia in 1996 as the new systems-librarian-on-site for the implementation of an Innovative Interfaces, Inc.
system at a large technical university.
With an MLS from the University of Arizona, Jan's
also a retired US Army officer.
22 years in/around the military taught her
to respect, and sometimes love, acronyms, strict project timelines, mountains of paperwork, following procurement rules, and working with people from a variety of (sometimes contending) constituencies.
