"It's the technically preferred route," said Janet Amos, a consultant with Amos Environment and Planning, who has been working with Totten Sims Hubicki on an environmental assessment of the bypass.Amos said the choice of a route is "not a done deal" and will be discussed at a public open house, which starts Thursday, March 4, at St. Dominic Catholic Secondary School in Bracebridge."We're asking for public feedback," she said.Alternative 2 provides significant relief to existing and projected areas of traffic congestion, Amos said.Last summer's widening of Wellington Street to a third lane will provide only about five years of relief from traffic congestion, Amos predicted."In the future, we know were going to need a new route there," she said. The Santa's Village route supports planned development in the western part of Bracebridge where a north-south road will be needed in the future, Amos explained."As each developer comes along, they can each build a part of it," she said."We assume it will be built in small stages."If the route near the pipeline were used, there would still be a need for another north-south river crossing in the future, she said.Unlike Alternative 6, the Santa's Village route does not encroach on significant fisheries habitat and has fewer watercourses to cross, Amos said.On the preferred route there are fewer existing residences that would be indirectly affected by the bypass, she said.Identifying the route well in advance of construction is intended to warn prospective homeowners and builders, she explained. It will "make sure nobody else has the heartbreak of building where the road is going to go," Amos said.
