Professor Jan Sykulski named IEEE Fellow Professor Jan Sykulski of the School of Electronics and Computer Science at the University of Southampton has been named a Fellow of the IEEE. He is honoured for his contributions to methods and applications of computational electromagnetics.
As an IEEE Fellow Professor Sykulski joins an elite group of engineers and researchers from around the world who are recognized by the IEEE (the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers) for their unusual distinction and outstanding contributions to the electrical and information technologies and sciences for the benefit of humanity and the profession. Elevation to Fellowship of the IEEE follows a rigorous evaluation procedure.
Professor Sykulski has been a member of staff in the University since 1980 and was appointed Professor of Applied Electromagnetics in 1995. He led the Electrical Power Engineering research group from 2000 to 2009. He has received numerous honours from universities and learned societies in many parts of the world, and in 2004 he received the title of Professor from the President of the Polish Republic, after nomination from the Universities of Lodz, Poznan, and Szczecin.

Professor Jan Sykulski Conference Chairman University of Southampton, UK
Professor Jan Sykulski (FIEEE, FIET, FInstP, FBCS) has for many years led a large research team at the University of Southampton, UK. Between 1995 and 2000 he held a prestigious chair sponsored jointly by the Royal Academy of Engineering and distribution company Southern Electric plc. He is currently Professor of Applied Electromagnetics in the School of Electronics and Computer Science (ECS). The School is the leading university department of its kind in the UK, with an international reputation for multidisciplinary research across computer science, electronics and electrical engineering, providing world-leading education in a vibrant research environment at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
Professor Sykulski's personal contribution is in the areas of power applications of high temperature superconductivity (e.g. HTS transformers and generators/motors), modelling of superconducting materials, advances in simulation of coupled field systems (electromagnetic, circuits and motion), development of fundamental methods of computational electromagnetics, in particular dual energy approach, and new concepts in design and optimisation of electromechanical devices for practical applications in industrial environment. He has authored or co-authored over 300 publications.
He is a founding member and past chair of the Professional Network Electromagnetics of IET, a founding Secretary/Treasurer/Editor of International Compumag Society, a Visiting Professor at universities in Canada, France, Italy, Poland and China, Editor of COMPEL and a member of International Steering Committees of many major international conferences. He is a member of the Council of the National Conference of University Professors and member of the Research Policy Group of the IET. He is Fellow of IEEE, IET, Institute of Physics and British Computer Society, and has an honorary title of Professor awarded by the President of Poland.

Jan K. Sykulski is Professor of Applied Electromagnetics and Head of Group in Electrical Power Engineering at the School of Electronics and Computer Science (ECS) of the University of Southampton.
He is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical Engineers*, the Institute of Physics and the British Computer Society in the UK, a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers in the USA, Founding Member and Editor of the International Compumag Society, and Editor of the Emerald journal COMPEL.Professor Sykulski is a Visiting Professor at McGill University, Montreal, Canada, WSHE (Academy of Humanities and Economics) and the Technical University of Lodz, Poland, University of Leuven, Belgium, University of Artois (Béthune), France, and the universities of Genova and Pavia, Italy. He is also a Consultant Professor at the North China Power University.
In 2004, Jan Sykulski was also awarded the title of "Professor" by the President of the Polish Republic as a mark of personal distinction. In Poland professorial titles are awarded by the state on the nomination of a university.Professor Sykulski was nominated by the universities of Lodz, Poznan and Szczecin.
Jan Sykulski is interested in all aspects of electrical power engineering, has published over 200 articles and papers and, since 1996, has been awarded grants totalling some £2 million for various research projects. He is currently working on a project to design, build and test a high temperature superconducting synchronous demonstration generator.
What are the major challenges in electrical power engineering given growing demand for energy and limitations on available resources, and are these challenges complicated by concerns about the environmental impact of some energy sources?
Jan Sykulski:
Taking the second part of your question first - yes, these challenges are considerably complicated by environmental issues.
