Tuacahn News - Tuacahn Establishes Summer Theatre Institute Auditions Underway for Les Miserables School Edition
www.tuacahn.org [cached]
Jan Shelton, former drama teacher at Lehi High School, now serving as Tuacahn High School's director of performing arts, will direct the Summer Institute's 2005 production. "Les Miserables changes people. I am so grateful to the authors for opening the show to high school age students first because they need it," says Shelton.
...
In addition to Jan Shelton, we've also hired Russ Saxton as technical director, and Rowland Butler as choreographer."
Tuacahn's Summer Theatre Institute is an eight-week program starting June 13, 2005, beginning with three weeks of intense rehearsals. The Les Miserables production will then run from July 7 to August 6 on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings with a Saturday matinee. "This is an unusual commitment for high school age students who are used to two or three hour rehearsals over a couple of months. It's sort of 'summer-stock meets summer camp.' It's a fantastic opportunity that will put them steps ahead of the normal high school performer when they are preparing for their profession," says Shelton.

"We decided to go to online ticket sales because the shows were selling out and our valued front office staff was spending a good portion of their day dealing with tickets sales instead of doing the necessary things to make the school function," says Artistic Director Jan Hunsaker."We were going to have to increase the price of tickets radically to hire a box office person, or move our sales to an online service, so we opted for showtix4you.com because many schools in the area use it. As a result of SPA using the service, Highland High now uses the service as well. Showtix4u.com is endorsed by the National Theatre Education Association because it is a free service for schools. !00% of the sale comes back to the school. Other reasons for moving to online sales include being able to predict how many programs need to be printed. Programs are expensive. Also, when people have their tickets in hand the show is able to start on time. But Hunsaker says both bonuses are wearing thin because more and more people are waiting to buy their tickets at the door to avoid handling fees through the website. "This is unfortunate because with a show like "The Mikado", or "Little Shop of Horrors", with a cast of over 50 in both cases the shows will be sold out and that create other issues we just can't solve." Hunsaker suggests buying tickets early in the run because the opening few nights of every show there are usually seats available.
