husband Noah have resided in Santa Barbara County for the past 48 years.
Both of their children were born and raised in Santa Barbara and attended the local schools, graduating to go on to colleges elsewhere.
represented the Santa Barbara County real estate community for nearly 20 years as the Vice President of Government Relations, tracking and analyzing local land use policies and legislative issues from the municipal to the national level.
At present, Jan has served as the Executive Director for the Santa Barbara County Flower & Nursery Growers Association for the past seven years, assisting them in their efforts to temper devastating land use policies that effectively could put the industry out of business, and providing strategic advice and actions at the local and State levels.

second year term as the President of R.I.T.A.
, a Federated Republican Women's Club.
Jan has served on the Board of Directors of the Santa Barbara County Taxpayers Association since 2001, and served two years as President of the Association in 2003/2004, aiding the entity's efforts to advocate for smaller, more efficient and streamlined local government, with the intent of reducing waste and monetary costs to local taxpayers.
Jan has served as legislative advisor to the Santa Barbara County Farm Bureau; past Chairman of the Legislative Advocates Committee for the California Association of Realtors; member of the Steering Committee for the Legislative Committee of the State Realtor Association; and, member of the Leadership Team for the Local Government Relations Committee of the State Association.
