Jamie Paterson then stepped forward to send a free kick onto the roof of the net, before sending a long-range drive whistling past the post.
The turning point of the game came on the hour mark, as Vale were reduced to ten men when midfielder Paterson became embroiled in an off the ball incident with Craigroyston's Kenny Manson and was shown a straight red card for raising his hands.
That Paterson ended up being the only player to take an early bath was nothing short of miraculous as the tackles flew in and squabbles broke out all over the park.

Paterson header enough for Poppies | [cached]

The main excitement of the first 45 minutes unfolded when the referee pointed to the penalty spot following a foul on Jamie Paterson, however the referee's assistant had already flagged for offside and Kettering were denied a golden chance to go in front.

With the match edging towards the latter stages and still no breakthrough, the worrying thought for some supporters was Kettering's habit of conceding late goals. However, those troublesome thoughts were somewhat eased in the 70th minute when midfielder Jamie Paterson connected with a header to find the back of the Dolly Blues net and propel his side into the lead.
As the final whistle sounded much to the relief of the Poppies traveling support, Paterson's second-half header proved to be enough and a first clean sheet for Kettering ensured a hard fought but very welcome 1-0 victory at the Giant Axe.
Kettering: Osborn, Diuk, McIlwain, Solkhon, Brown, J.Gould, Burgess, Robinson, Paterson, McDougald, Moore.
