What: World premiere of James Sunwall's play about a single day in the life of a 13th-century troubadour sentenced to death
The story's author, James Sunwall, has drawn upon stoic and tumultuous life experiences, growing up during the Great Depression and serving in the Pacific during World War II. He went on to the University of Minnesota and Yale, and then taught fiction writing and poetry for 30 years at the University of Florida. He wrote one play called "Dodge County Fair," which recounts a Depression-era boy who longs to go to the fair while his family struggles to survive. "Escape of the Unicorn" is also about a longing for life or for the meaning of life.
"His poetry is worth more than life itself," Sunwall said of the main character.
"In a place like this, he can say anything and there's no penalty. He's condemned to death anyway," Sunwall said.
