James grew up in the film industry. As a child actor, he performed in feature films alongside such notables as Henry Fonda, Walter Brennen, Buddy Ebsen, and Hayley Mills. He also guest starred in episodes of Bewitched, My Three Sons, The Munsters, and Adam-12.
Behind the lens professional work started after he attended film school and a wide variety of staff and freelance assignments led to a specialization in cinematography and the founding of his own business, The Migrant FilmWorkers.
Jim has been the Director of Photography on over forty Feature Films and Movies of the Week, and partnered in the development of seven TV series. In the last few years, he has been developing an expertise in shooting filmstyle digital while pioneering the use of Digital Cinema cameras. Recent projects have also led to a wealth of practical experience with an in depth understanding of 3D acquisition.
In the documentary realm, he was DP on the Lionsgate theatrical release The US vs.

James is the President and Cofounder of the nonprofit educational cooperative, The Digital Cinema Society, a group dedicated to the industry's informed integration of new technology. Additionally, he is a contributor to a number of industry trade journals and is a sought after speaker on the topic of emerging digital technology.

James Mathers is an extremely versatile and well rounded Filmmaker, having worked in virtually every facet of the film and television industry. He started at a young age as an actor, joining the Screen Actors Guild in 1960.

Retiring from acting in the 70's, Jim attended film school at California State University Northridge. Behind the camera, professional work started in 1975 with a variety of staff and freelance production assignments which developed a broad base of filmmaking experience. Jim Mathers Video/Films, Inc., founded in 1978, continues to serve as a resource providing production and post-production services for film and television. While running his own business and serving in a variety of capacities, Jim developed an expertise in cinematography and has been the Director of Photography on over twenty-five feature films and MOW's. He has seen five TV series from inception through the first season, and has recently been specializing in shooting "filmstyle" digital with a pilot for DreamWorks, the feature "Extreme Close-Up" and the ABC series "Hypernauts".
While still active as a Cinematographer, Jim has also compiled a long list of credits as a Director including "Lost Galaxy", the feature home video "Beetleborgs: The Movie", episodes of the Fox series "Extreme Courage", as well as four short dramatic films, five music videos, numerous television commercials, PSA's and documentaries.
