James Kamte
The club is proud of the fact that South Africa's leading young black golfer, James Kamte, learned to play at St Francis Bay and was encouraged in his golf by the members. He grew up in Humansdorp and first visited the golf course as a 10-year-old caddie. He later became club champion. Former club captain and chairman Ian Fynn obtained a bursary for Kamte which enabled him to complete his schooling at Woodridge College, a private boarding school at Van Staden's Pass midway between Port Elizabeth and St Francis Bay.

Kamte, who finished fourth in a good week in Thailand to earn his Asian Tour playing privileges, was the first black golfer to win on the tough summer swing leg of the Sunshine Tour last year. He unleashed an explosive five-birdie back nine to overhaul his rivals, as then SA Open champion James Kingston struggled to keep in touch with his final-round 74. Kamte, the 26-year-old from Queenstown, whose first victory came on at the Seekers Travel Pro-Am on the Winter Swing in 2007, shot a final round 70 for a winning total of 11-under-par 211, three shots clear of Kingston.
