From 1989 to 1995, while in prison, Josh taught General Education courses to other inmates.
After his release in 1997, he entered Merritt Community College in Oakland and earned his Associate's Degree in 2000.

With encouragement from family and faculty mentors, he was admitted to the University of California at Berkeley in 2001 and received his Bachelor of Arts in Sociology in 2003.
