James H. (Jim) Holman, Managing Member, The Car Store Jim Holman began selling Chevrolets in 1969 for Jim Click Chevrolet in his hometown of Altus, OK. After graduating from college with a degree in economics, he transitioned from "selling cars" parttime into a fulltime career in the automobile business. He has sold cars, managed dealership departments, managed dealerships, owned dealerships, and was VP of Operations for Cross Continent Auto Retailers, Inc. (NYSE-XC), the first publically traded auto dealership group in the US. Holman says, "I have had the marvelous opportunity to stand on the shoulders of some of the greatest car guys that there will ever be and I am very grateful to them". Other highlights in addition to the CCAR IPO include assembling and launching the "Pink Cadillac Program" for Mary Kay Cosmetics in Dallas in the mid-seventies and founding a LH/PH operation in 2001 which grew into The Car Store located in south Oklahoma City, which he founded in 2005.

Jim and his wife, Angie, live in Oklahoma City. Both are big believers in giving back to the community and they act on that. Angie rocks babies for the neo-natal unit at Oklahoma Health Science Center and drives Mobile Meals for their church. Jim calls her a "rock star" and is a Board as well as an Executive Council Member and is Treasurer for the Oklahoma chapter of the Alzheimer's Association. They are both quite active in St Luke's United Methodist Church where Jim is a past chairman of the Finance Committee and the Administrative Board as well as currently a member of the Staff-Parish Committee. Additionally in 2012, Holman was appointed by Governor Mary Fallin as a Commissioner to the Oklahoma Used Motor Vehicle & Parts Commission.

Insider's Guide to the Fastest Growing Market Segment

Jim Holman, owner of The Car Store in Oklahoma City, Okla., has a lease here-pay here operation and just opened his second location on July 1. Lease here-pay here is fast becoming a popular way to do business for both legal and regulatory compliance issues depending on state laws.

Holman said the two stores move about 50 units a month, and he has a portfolio of about $7.2 million.
"We have our own service operation and we just don't have time to do outside work," he said. "Because of the demand, we have to get out there and buy vehicles to put on the lot, and in many cases we have to buy vehicles that need more reconditioning."
He said he would like to build or go rent a service facility, but doesn't like the idea of having an off-site service operation. He said it is difficult enough to keep a finger on the pulse of the service operation, and moving it off-site would only exacerbate the situation.
"For right now I just will have to live a world of constantly being behind," he said. "If I did get another location, I'd have the mortgage or the rent, and I'd have to add two more techs. That would mean at least another $10,000 a month, and that's a lot of dough to move away from immediate supervision. Even if it's just a block away, we're not there to oversee it."
Holman has been in the automobile business for 40 years. He was the vice president of operations for Cross Continent Auto Retailers, which was the first automotive group to go public back in 1996.
"I have multi dealership management experience, and every now and then I get a call from a head hunter who wants to know if I'm interested in a similar position."
Holman said he turns them town. He said he has no interest in returning to the days where he was constantly having warranty issues with the manufacturer, rebate charge backs, not getting his TV advertising credits and having to beg for cars he could sell and having to put on the war paint to refuse cars no one could sell.
"Yes, the customers are different," he said.
...
Holman is concerned about vendor's insurance or finding some product that can help him get full coverage on his vehicles.
"We are really studying on we can handle these insurance issues," he said.
