View Larger Family legacy Herbstreit's father, Jim, was an Ohio State player and captain (seen here with Herbstreit in 1992). He later served as an assistant coach to Woody Hayes at Ohio State and Bo Schembechler at Miami University. By Staff report Jim Herbstreit, a captain on the 1960 Ohio State football team and father of ESPN personality Kirk Herbstreit, died Thursday, according to a report from the Columbus Dispatch.
Thursday morning Jim Herbstreit passed away in his home in Cleveland at the age of 77.
He was a former captain for Ohio State under legendary football coach Woody Hayes. Jim Herbstreit was a running back, defensive back and special teams player for Ohio State from 1958-60. He was selected as a captain his senior year. The most important attributes coach Hayes cared about in a player was the effort he would give on and off the football field, a winning attitude and most importantly he had to be a young man of good character. To be a captain for his team you had to excel in all of these areas. Even though there were six seniors on the team in 1960 who were drafted by the NFL, Jim Herbstreit was chosen to be a captain. Herbstreit obviously embodied those characteristics that were dear to Woody and he captained the Buckeyes to a 7-2 record in the 1960 season. He impressed Woody Hayes so much he was asked to join the coaching staff after he graduated. Herbstreit coached for two years at Ohio State before following Bo Schembechler to Miami. After two years as an assistant to Bo, Herbstreit left coaching to enter private business. When Kirk was selected as a captain his senior season in 1992 the two joined James and Jeff Davidson as the only father and son captains for the Buckeyes. Jim Herbstreit carved out quite a legacy at Ohio State. He played and coached for one of the legends of the game and led his team to a winning record as a captain his senior season. But probably more important to Woody than anything else Jim Herbstreit accomplished at Ohio State was what he did in the final game of his career. He captained his team to a victory over "That Team Up North". The Buckeyes walked out of The Horseshoe with a 7-0 victory over the Wolverines. You know Woody loved that. We send our thoughts and prayers to all of Jim Herbstreit's family and friends.
Herbstreit's father, Jim Herbstreit, had been a co-captain (along with offensive tackleJim Tyrer) of the 1960 Ohio State team, and was later an assistant coach at Ohio State under Woody Hayes.
When Kirk Herbstreit was named co-captain in 1992, the two became only the second father-and-son duo to have each been Ohio State captains. (James and Jeff Davidson were the first in 1989; Pepper and Dionte Johnson became the third in 2007.) Herbstreit graduated from Ohio State in 1993 with a degree in Business Administration.
