James P. Covert President and Chief Executive Officer, Institute For Transfusion Medicine (ITxM)
Jim Covert joined the Institute for Transfusion Medicine as the President and Chief Executive Officer in May, 2007.
In this position, Mr. Covert's
responsibilities include The Institute for Transfusion Medicine
and its entities, including four blood centers, Central Blood Bank
in Pittsburgh, PA, LifeSource Blood Services
in Chicago, IL, Virginia Blood Services
in Richmond, VA and Geisinger Blood Center
(a joint venture between ITxM & Geisinger Health System) in Danville, PA.
The organization also includes the Centralized Transfusion Service serving hospitals in the Pittsburgh, Chicago and Wheeling, WV area, ITxM Diagnostics, The Hemophilia Center of Western Pennsylvania and Creative Testing Solutions
(a donor testing joint venture).
In addition to being Vice-Chair of the National Blood Foundation, Mr. Covert is an active Director on the following Boards: The Institute for Transfusion Medicine, The Blood Science Foundation, Creative Testing Solutions, the Hemophilia Center of Western Pennsylvania and Hospice Compassus in Nashville, TN.
Prior to joining ITxM, Mr. Covert had over 16 years of experience in healthcare sales, marketing and acquisition initiatives.
Mr. Covert's healthcare career began at Baxter International's Physical Therapy Division, as Director of Sales and Development.
In November of 1992 Baxter spun out the alternate site business called Caremark into an independent publicly traded company where Mr. Covert served as Vice President of Development for Caremark Physical Therapy from 1992 - 1995.
Mr. Covert led all acquisition related activities at Caremark as well as the company's Oncology Services Business.
Mr. Covert expanded Caremark's Physical Therapy presence from 50 to 127 sites in 14 states.
Caremark Physical Therapy was acquired by HealthSouth Corporation in 1995.
was then Senior Vice President of Development for Horizon/CMS Healthcare Corporation
At Horizon/CMS, Mr. Covert
had responsibility for the merger and acquisition effort as well as all sales and marketing related initiatives.
led the rapid growth effort for the Physical Therapy Division from 20 to over 200 sites.
was ultimately sold to HealthSouth Corporation
in November 1998.
In 2000, Mr. Covert started Keystone Strategies, LLC a healthcare consulting group.
Prior to joining ITxM, Mr. Covert was Sr. Vice President of Sales, Marketing & Development for HealthSouth Corporation in Birmingham, Alabama.
Mr. Covert joined HealthSouth as part of the turnaround team in 2004 and had responsibility for all Sales and Marketing, Public Relations, Sports Medicine and acquisition initiatives for the Outpatient Therapy Division.
HealthSouth's Outpatient Division was acquired by Select Medical Corporation in April 2007.
Mr. Covert earned a bachelor's degree in English from the University of Pittsburgh.
Mr. Covert also served as an All-Pro tackle and team captain for the Chicago Bears from 1983-1990.
