James P. Borgstede, M.D., an accomplished clinician and educator whose experience and expertise in radiology economics, quality and safety, and healthcare politics have made him a voice for the specialty, is the newest member of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) Board of Directors. Dr. Borgstede will assume the position of Board Liaison for International Affairs, as Richard L. Baron, M.D., becomes chair of the Board of Directors.

"The RSNA as an organization is visionary and outstanding in both education and research in imaging and image-guided therapies," Dr. Borgstede said. "The RSNA annual meeting is the venue for education and research presentations and for radiologists around the world to meet face to face and discuss issues relevant to the future of our specialty for the benefit of our patients."
A professor of radiology and vice chair of professional services, clinical operations and quality at the University of Colorado, Denver, Dr. Borgstede is president of the American Board of Radiology and president-elect of the International Society of Radiology.
Dr. Borgstede's career has included both private practice and academic radiology. He has spent his teaching career at the University of Colorado. For more than 25 years, he has worked to advance radiology through his service to and leadership of numerous national and local radiologic and medical organizations.
Dr. Borgstede served on many American College of Radiology (ACR) committees and task forces before becoming ACR chairman of the Board of Chancellors in 2004 and president in 2006. Since his presidency, he has continued to work with ACR in capacities such as the Committee on International Service, with which he traveled to Grace Children's Hospital Port au Prince as part of the Haiti Radiology Project.
Dr. Borgstede's work with ACR included testimony before the U.S. House of Representatives Ways and Means Health Subcommittee "Managing the Use of Imaging Services" hearing in 2005 and the U.S. House Rural Healthcare Caucus "Utilization Rates of Medical Imaging Equipment" hearing in 2009.
A member of RSNA since 1976, Dr. Borgstede has been part of the annual meeting refresher course faculty for many years. Dr. Borgstede has held numerous positions with the RSNA Research & Education (R&E) Foundation, including chair of the R&E Board of Trustees for the last year. He served on the RSNA Quality Committee from 2009 to 2011. He is currently the R&E liaison to the RSNA International Radiology Education Committee.
RSNA was the first organization he joined, Dr. Borgstede said, and he looks forward to helping the Society continue to extend its high-quality educational opportunities to people across the globe. "I joined during my first year of residency, and I still remember how I was immediately captivated by the organization and the quality and breadth of the educational opportunities," he said.
Dr. Borgstede served on the editorial board of the Journal of the American College of Radiology (JACR) from 2004 to 2008 and currently serves on the editorial advisory board of American Family Physician and as a reviewer for JACR. He is a past-president of the Colorado Physician Health Program, the Colorado peer-assistance program for physicians. He is also a past-president of the Colorado State Board of Medical Examiners.
ACR has awarded Dr. Borgstede its William T. Thorwarth Jr., M.D., Award for Excellence in Economics and Health Policy and its gold medal. Dr. Borgstede also received the first gold medal awarded by the Colorado Radiological Society.

Dr Borgstede is currently Professor and Vice Chairman of Radiology at the University of Colorado. His administrative responsibilities at the University of Colorado include departmental professional billing, coding, compliance, and human resources. His Vice Chairman responsibilities also include quality and safety and membership on the School of Medicine Clinical Leadership Council. His responsibilities with the University of Colorado Physicians, Inc. (UPI) include contract negotiations and membership on the UPI Finance Committee. He is a past member of the AMA Relative Value Update Committee (RUC) where he served as chair of the Research Subcommittee. He is immediate past president of the American Board of Radiology. He is past president and past chairman of the board of the American College of Radiology (ACR). Dr Borgstede is a member and chair of the Radiological Society of North America's Research and Education Foundation Board of Trustees. The Research and Education Foundation is one of the largest non-governmental grant providers for radiology research. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Radiological Society of North America He is President-Elect of the International Society of Radiology. Dr Borgstede is past president of the Colorado Physician Health Program (CPHP), the Colorado peer assistance program for physicians. He is the past president of the Colorado State Board of Medical Examiners. He was a member of this board for 8 years and president for 5, completing his term in 2001. Dr Borgstede's research is in the areas of socioeconomics, government relations, quality, and safety. He has delivered more than 100 lectures on these topics nationally and internationally. Dr Borgstede was a member of a private radiology practice for 27 years in Colorado Springs where he also served as president. He left this practice in 2007 for a fellowship and research in Magnetic Resonance Imaging at the University of California at San Diego. His medical degree is from the University of Illinois (1974). He trained as radiology resident at the University of Colorado Health Science Center (1975-1978) where he was the Chief Resident in Radiology in 1978. The American Board of Radiology certified him in 1978. In 2009 he was awarded the Gold Medal of the American College of Radiology which is their highest honor. In 2012 he was awarded the first Gold Medal of the Colorado Radiological Society. In 2014 he was awarded the President's Award for Leadership from the University of Colorado Hospital
