Verde Valley Medical Centerâ€™s President and Chief Executive Officer James J. Bleicher, M.D., M.S., recently was named the 2012 winner of the American Hospital Associationâ€™s (AHA) Shirley Ann Munroe Leadership Award.
The national award recognizes the accomplishments of chief executives and administrators from small hospitals who have achieved improvements in local health delivery and health status through their leadership and direction.

Since joining VVMC
in 2009 as the hospitalâ€™s vice president of Operations and Medical Affairs, VVMCâ€™s
nationally reported Hospital Quality Alliance
(HQA) measures have increased from 65 percent to 92 percent.
Additionally, the hospital has significantly decreased infection rates, reporting zero central-line infections as well as zero ventilator-associated pneumonia during the last four years.

In the past two years, employee engagement has increased from the 18th percentile to the 90th percentile as measured through an annual survey conducted by the Advisory Board.
Because of his
work, Dr. Bleicher
was selected by Professional Research Consultants to speak this year at their national conference on the topic of building a positive hospital culture.

Before becoming president, he was the vice president of Medical Affairs, serving as a liaison between hospital administration and the VVMC medical staff.
In addition to his

has many years of clinical experience as a hospitalist and internist.
