Quality in Manufacturing - Jul/Aug 99 - Year 2000 predictions for ISO 9000

www.manufacturingcenter.com [cached]

The ISO 9000 series is being revised for several reasons, says James S. Bigelow, a member of the ISO TC 176 since 1988.First, the series is scheduled to be reviewed every five years.Second, several groups--like small manufacturers and government agencies--find the current standard tough to use.Working with the group revising ISO 9001 and 9004, Bigelow said several other items needed to be addressed in the new version."There is also more focus on continuous improvement," Bigelow says."There was no intention for those who used the 1-20 elements to have to rewrite their whole quality system.Just compare it to what you have, fill in the gaps, and keep going from there."Bigelow says several boundaries also were identified for the revised ISO 9001. It can adapt within reason to meet the needs of an organization," Bigelow says."This doesn't necessitate the restructuring of your system."He stressed the importance of familiarizing an organization with the quality management principles."Think about what you need to do to meet the new standards," he said.Bigelow says the CD2 is being validated.A meeting is planned for September in San Francisco to finalize a draft for vote."We plan to publish the revised standard in the third quarter of the Year 2000," he added.
