A press release sent from CCISD Superintendent James Cowley stated that district officials are working with the Port Lavaca Police Department and Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office to investigate a “rumor following an altercation between students at Calhoun High School.
The press release did not elaborate about the rumor other than to say no weapons were involved in an altercation between students at Calhoun High School earlier in the week and that “appropriate disciplinary measuresâ€ were taken with those students. In a follow up email, Cowley reiterated that there was a “rumor.â€ Cowley was ambiguous and did not explain further, simply stating that a rumor was reported to the school district. He also did not answer whether weapons were expected to be brought to CHS. However, Cowley maintained that the fight never took place on school property. He said the fight initially began at a house on Nueces Street and never reached school property, but did involve CCISD students. Cowley said the matter was handled by PLPD. Cowley did not confirm if the threats Thursday were related to Tuesday’s incident. Cowley said all safety and security measures that were put into place Wednesday will remain “until a full review has been completed.â€ The Thursday release from Cowley mentioned two other rumorsâ€"one about a lockdown at CHS Wednesday and the other about April 29 being designated by students as senior skip day. The release stated that rumors about the lockdown were false. There was no other information about senior skip day or why it was mentioned in the release. When asked whether the skip day rumor was fabricated so students would have a reason not to attend classes Friday, Cowley simply called the matter “an additional rumor,â€ with no further explanation. Prior to the press release being issued, Cowley addressed penalties students will face if not in school Friday.

School calendars are based on hours, and the CCISD calendar exceeds minimum state requirements, CCISD Superintendent James Cowley said.
The later start date will allow for additional staff development and completion of several bond projects, the superintendent added. Teachers will work 187 days. For students at HJM Elementary, Jackson-Roosevelt Elementary, Port O’Connor Elementary and Seadrift School, the school day will be from 7:45 a.m. to 3:35 p.m. Students at Travis Middle School, Hope High School and Calhoun High School will begin class at 8 a.m. and end at 3:50 p.m. Most campuses had the school day extended by 15 to 30 minutes, Cowley said. Cowley and CTE Director Diana Freeman said with the increased minutes, funding should not drop. Cowley and board members discussed how food services staff members becoming a Sodexo employee could change their benefits. Cowley said Sodexo has equal to or better benefits, but should a district employee move over to Sodexo, that person would not be able to contribute to the Teacher Retirement System of Texas. Cowley noted that Aramark did not meet several criteria. Sodexo’s yearly cost is estimated at $127,198, while SFE is approximately $96,000, Cowley said. However, Sodexo guarantees that $121,847 will be added back to the cafeteria fund balance for the first year, he added. Cowley said the NOC building will be included as part of the new middle school project, rather than be its own separate project. Cowley said an organization holding a fishing event in Port O’Connor has requested 15 school buses in July to shuttle people between parking at the Port O’Connor Community Center and where the event is taking place. Cowley and district counsel Anne Marie Odefey recommended not amending the policy at the time. A specific portion of the fund must be spent by the district or sent back to the state, Cowley said.

Initially, a press release provided by CCISD Superintendent James Cowley said school district officials have cooperated with local authorities to investigate “an incident that occurred at Calhoun High School March 7, but did not elaborate about the charges.
