James P. Alender Appointed Chairman of VHA Central Regional Hospital Board
Kokomo, IND. (January 19, 2007) - James P. Alender
, president and chief executive officer of Howard Regional Health System, has been selected as chairman of the board of VHA Central
, the regional arm of VHA Inc.
, the health care alliance that serves not-for-profit hospitals across the nation.
In this capacity, Alender
will meet quarterly with the CEOs from approximately 59 VHA
member hospitals in Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan and Ohio to discuss how VHA can help address common clinical or operational challenges the hospitals face and how they can work together as VHA members to solve their own problems with VHA's assistance.

."I look forward to working with colleagues from across the region to improve the overall quality care we offer to patients in all our communities."Alender has been on the board of directors of VHA Central Indiana since 1998, most recently serving as vice chairman.He assumed his current position of President and Chief Executive Officer of Howard Regional Health System in 1997, and serves as Chief Executive Officer of Howard Regional West Campus Specialty Hospital and Pillars Community Housing, Inc.He is a member of the Board of Managers of Indiana Surgery Center/Howard Community Hospital.
Prior to this, Alender
served as the hospital's vice president of strategic planning; president of Key Bank /Society IN; president and CEO of Ameritrust Bank
, Central Indiana; and in several other executive positions in the banking industry.A graduate of Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana, and the University of Wisconsin Graduate School of Commercial Banking & Finance, Alender is an associate member of the American College of Health Care Executives from which he received the 2003 Northern Indiana Regents Award and was named the 2003 Hospital Administrator of the Year.Alender currently serves as president of the Indiana University Kokomo Advisory Board, and he co-chaired the Indiana University Kokomo 2003-2004 Kresge Science Initiative, which raised more than $500,000 for a science equipment endowment.He
is the 2006 recipient of the Indiana University
Kokomo Distinguished Service Award.A director on the board of Salin Bank & Trust Company-IN, Alender is also a member of Kokomo Rotary Club, the American Cancer Society, Imaging Center of North Central Indiana, Partners for a Healthier Community, and Kokomo Sports Center.Alender is also an associate member of the National Health Lawyers Association.
Past board affiliations include the Kokomo Country Club; United Way of Howard County; the Community Foundation of Howard County; Howard Community Hospital Foundation
and the YWCA.Alender has also served as adjunct faculty at Indiana University Kokomo.
