Next up were Jake Chalmers (Property Director) and William Howarth (Finance Director), who had made their way through the snow from Matlock to brief us on their respective areas.
With the formal business of the meeting done, and after a break for lunch, it was time for YHA's property director Jake Chalmers to give his presentation
Towards Youth Hostels in the 21st Century
. As noted above, there will be a lot of investment in hostels over the coming years, and Jake
team have done considerable work in determining how that money should be spent.
For each of these segments, Jake
team have devised a set of "golden rules" defining what facilities should be available in each type of room for each type of hostel.
These rules have been devised from wide-ranging research both inside and outside the Association, taking in such issues as customer expectations, health & safety and what our competitors are doing.
The process has been extremely thorough, dealing with over 20 different types of room.
was able to show us, by way of an example the 19 rules governing bedrooms in "purple" hostels (don't worry, they aren't going to be painted to match the segment name!).
That's the title of a presentation that YHA Property Director Jake Chalmers will be giving at the upcoming Central Region AGM.
will describe the design, features and construction of modern hostels, concentrating on the small self-catering variety.
