Jaime Verazin returns to area with Mark Stuart Dance Theatre
May 22. 2014 1:59PM An airborne Jaime Verazin rehearses with the Mark Stuart Dance Theatre. The Mark Stuart Dance Theatre has been polishing 'Standard Time.' 'We're in workshop mode,' dancer/associate choreographer Jaime Verazin said. IF YOU GO The first scenario is set in the 1930s, dancer/associate choreographer Jaime Verazin said, explaining the story shows how differences of wealth and class can come between people. The dance style is "grounded swing" for the lower classes and "more Fred-and-Ginger" for the upper classes. "You see the same thing in Act II," Verazin said, describing the setting as the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s, the differences as racial and the music as "a mixture of rock-and-roll and groove funk." "You'll see a language of white folks and, we like to say, non-white folks, because we have multiple ethnicities," said Verazin, who grew up in Northeastern Pennsylvania and last year reached the semifinals of the popular televised competition "America's Got Talent." In the show's third act, set in the 21st century, she said, "We have our first triangle of lovers, and it deals with sexual orientation." "Even though we think we've moved beyond these things, we haven't," she said. "We are producing this on our own, through donations and grants," Verazin said, adding it's because of "a following of believers that we've been able to push through and put it on at the Kirby." Verazin has been known to dangle unharnessed by her feet from a chandelier, and, if you're wondering whether she enjoyed monkey bars as a child, the answer is yes. If you're coming to the show tonight, Verazin suggests you arrive early to appreciate the vintage atmosphere that has been created in the lobby. "Come early and get into that 1930s mode," she said.

"It was a surprise for us too," says Allentown native Jaime Verazin.
Verazin is one of three Lehigh Valley natives in the group. On Thursday, Verazin says: Verazin, who was born in Allentown and moved as a child to Wilkes Barre, has been involved with the group since its inception. Verazin danced in the Lehigh Valley with Allentown's Repertory Dance Theatre, and considers its co-director, Trinette Singleton, a former Joffrey Ballet dancer, her "mentor and dance mom." She attended DeSales University in Center Valley for a year, but left to join Momix, an internationally known dance-illusion troupe. Both Rebecca and Verazin were among the dancers who auditioned with the group in New York on "America's Got Talent" and appeared on the episode that aired June 4. Verazin is used to performing live but dancing on the reality show is "a totally different ball game." "The pressure of it all is worth it to be dancing at Radio City Music Hall, where you dream to be as a dancer," she says.

JAIME VERAZIN
JAIME VERAZIN Jaime Verazin is a professional dancer who lives and performs in New York City. I met Jaime after watching her perform with "Studies In Feedback" at the Scope art fair last month. We instantly connected and I knew I wanted to photograph her. For our shoot, I met her at Lincoln Center where she recently performed two seasons with the Metropolitan Opera in Aida, Les Contes de Hoffmann, and Armida, in which she performed a non vocal lead role, Love. I then followed her to the Union Square farmers market where she wanted to pick up some new flowers to plant in her garden with the help of her boyfriend, Chris, and pooch, Button. In the afternoon, Jaime brought me to her rehearsal with choreographer Katherine Helen Fisher, where I photographed the pair as they developed a new piece that they will be performing together this fall at Jaime has performed dance and vocal lead roles in the Wizard of Oz, Cinderella and Godspell, and is an accomplished pianist.
