Within minutes of shooting heroin into his body with a hypodermic needle, 22-year-old Jake Zubkoff of Monroe doubled over, in pain that was so unbearable he could barely speak. "I think I got some bad dope," he reportedly told a friend before 911 was called and Mr. Zubkoff was rushed to the hospital. Hours later he was dead. Prosecutors say Teisha Wandt, 23, supplied the drug that killed Mr. Zubkoff and have charged her with delivery of a controlled substance causing death.

"It is impossible to know what heroin Jake injected that night," Mr. Calkins argued before First District Judge Mark S. Braunlich.
...
Family members said Mr. Zubkoff, who injected the drug three to five times a day, tried to kick the addiction but could not. In fact, Dr. Cheryl Loewe, a deputy chief with the Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office, testified that Mr. Zubkoff died of a heroin overdose but he also had methadone in his system. Methadone is a drug used by addicts to try to wean off heroin. Monroe County Chief Assistant Prosecutor Jack Simms said it was Ms. Wandt who supplied the heroin that killed Mr. Zubkoff on Nov. 16.

"Jake had been throwing a fit trying to find heroin," she said on the stand.
...
Witnesses testified that Mr. Zubkoff hid heroin throughout the house to keep it from being stolen.

But Jake was a grown man. He made his own decisions and we could not keep him in rehab against his will. Believe me we tried everything. We did not just set by and watch. The only thing I regret was not putting him in jail. He was safe from his addiction there. I will never make that mistake again. o A Mother thank you again for taking Jake in. I know he had some really good friends I think I know who's mother you are too. Your son was a great friend to Jake. I Love Sandy she is my sister but she has done things in the past I do not agree with and she knows that. I'm not mad I'm just glad it being talked about. I hoped at his funeral with the hundreds of people in attendants that some of them kids would learn something. Hope that by him dieing one of his friend who may be fighting the same fight would find the help and the strength they needed to get clean.

You loved Jake , but why didn't anyone get him away from his drug infested home. Its just very sad that his mother watched this all go down. She is the one that could have saved his life that night.

Please don't get me wrong I too agree drug dealers should be locked up. I just personally do not know Ms Wandt. however I have no doubt she was one of the people to supply Jake this drug and should be punished. When I said I knew Jake well I truly did and the last time that he went to jail as harsh as it sounds I was just praying they would keep him long enough to get the craving out of his system. My entire family watched Jake struggle with his addiction as a matter a fact he actually stayed with us a short time while trying to fight this illness. This was a kid that never one time showed myself nor my husband any disrespect and it really does hurt us deeply that this kid with so much potential lost his fight to this horrible addiction.

To A Mother thank you for your for kind words you said about Jake and his Grandparents. As for what you said about his mother I'm not going to touch that. About helping the DRUG DEALER he bought from never ganna happen. I would help OMNI get every DRUG DEALER off the street if I could. Family or not lesson learned. I would rather my nephew be in JAIL than where he is now. I don't think just because Jacob's mother may or may not have a problem should mean this DRUG DEALER should get a free pass. If his mother is into to drug I believe she should sit in jail too. But as far as I now she is clean. She drops regularly to prove that. If she ever drop dirty she should be in jail too.

Jacob was a product of his environment.
