The first album for ATO, Strength ..., 13 Mar 2015 [cached]
The first album for ATO, Strength to Survive was inspired by Bob Marley's Survival, which Jacob Hemphill, singer and guitarist for SOJA, says has the best lyrics and bass lines ever recorded.
Hemphill also derives his inspiration from Africa. He says when he listened to Marley's album it brought back memories of Africa where he lived as a child. His father was a resident representative for the IMF in Liberia in the late 1980's.
Hemphill has a broader perspective of folk music than the usual artists - like Joni Mitchell, Woodie Guthrie and Bob Dylan who spring to mind when folk is mentioned.
Currently the band consists of eight members: Jacob Hemphill on vocals and guitar, Trevor Young, guitarist, Ryan Berty on drums, Patrick O'Shea on keyboard, Bob Jefferson on bass and Ken Brownell on percussion as well as Hellman Escorcia and Rafael Rodriguez.
