Jack Ponce Enrile Jr. yesterday asked President Aquino to give priority to the welfare of household helps by signing into law the so-called Kasambahay bill. "To begin with, President Aquino should be lauded for his political will in pushing for the enactment into law of two controversial measures, the Sin Tax law and the (Reproductive Health) law that he firmly believed would ultimately(redound) to the benefit of the greater number of our people," said Enrile, one of the leading senatorial candidates in the May election of the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA). "President Aquino would be further demonstrating his concern to the poorer members of our society if he signs into law the Kasambahay bill that was already approved by both chambers of Congress," he added. Enrile, during his first term in the 11th Congress, reportedly filed the first bill seeking to uplift the working condition of household workers through legislation. Once signed into law by the President, he noted, an estimated three million household workers would immediately share in its many benefits. The benefits contained in the bicameral report submitted to Malacañang include the setting of a "minimum wage" of P2,500 a month in Metro Manila, P2,000 for those in chartered cities and first class municipalities and P1,500 month in other municipalities. Employers shall also provide their househelp with contributions to the Social Security System, the Philippine Health Insurance Corp. and Pag-Ibig, aside from food, board and lodging and medical assistance. Meanwhile, Enrile bared he hosted the visit of the entire senatorial ticket of UNA, including Vice President Jejomar Binay, to his hometown in Cagayan last Tuesday. The visit of the UNA team in Cagayan was part of a three-day consultation sortie of the coalition in Cagayan Valley and check the conditions of the region. The solon was joined by Cagayan Gov. Bong Antonio and Vice Gov. Odi Fausto in welcoming the party to the city of Tuguegarao. They are scheduled to visit the towns of Iguig, Solana and Peñablanca. Enrile said the visit was made to meet the local leaders and townsfolk.
