About Dr. Jean Fritz Bazin
...
Dr. Jean Fritz Bazin
Archdeacon Fritz Bazin was born in St. Marc, Haiti. He received both bachelor's and master's degrees in theology from the Episcopal Theological Seminary of the Caribbean in Puerto Rico, and in 2002 received the Doctor of Ministry degree from the South Florida Center for Theological Studies in Miami.
In July 2007 he was appointed by Bishop Leo Frade to a part-time position on the diocesan staff, working with immigration concerns and other social justice issues, and in November 2007 he was installed as Archdeacon for Immigration and Social Justice. Fluent in English and Spanish, as well as French and Creole, he moves easily among the various ethnic groups and cultures that make up the diocese.
Bazin was ordained to the priesthood in 1967, and went on to serve churches not only in Haiti, but also in Jamaica, Barbados and Brooklyn, NY. In 1980 he was named Human Rights Officer for the Caribbean Conference of Churches, based in Barbados. In that position he also served as liaison officer for French and Latin American territories and as editor of L'Action Chretienne.
In 1982 he was called to St. Paul et les Martyrs d'Haiti, Miami, to begin the first diocesan ministry to Miami's growing Haitian community; he served that parish until 1986, and again from 1993 until spring 2008, when he resigned to devote full time to the responsibilities of his diocesan ministry. He has also served at two other Miami parishes, Todos los Santos and Incarnation. In the early 1990s he was the diocesan Program Officer for Haitian Ministry and for many years was a chaplain at Jackson Memorial Hospital. He served as dean of the North Dade Deanery from 2002-2007, and currently serves on the diocesan board of Examining Chaplains.
In January 2002 he received the Ghandi-King-Ikeda Peace award (Prix de la Paix), given by Morehouse College in Atlanta, Ga., for his work for justice and human rights. In November 2003 he was named an honorary canon of Trinity Cathedral, Miami.
