"Reuters" is producing a story about Isha Fofana and her art centre in The Gambia
These days a TV crew of the international news agency "Reuters" has produced a documentary about Isha Fofana and her "Mama Africa - women's museum and art centre" in Batokunku.
...
The head producers in Nairobi has heard from different sources about Isha Fofana and her project of a women' museum and art centre in Batokunku / The Gambia. They have decided to cover this feature as a story of a successful artist in Europe coming back home to participate in the development of her country. Almost four days the team was filming at different location in The Gambia, mainly at her magnificent place in Batokunku. Other shots were done in the village it self and the beach as well as at the "Ngala Lodge", Atlantic road in Bakau. Isha Fofana is right at the moment exhibiting some of her artworks at this place, one of Gambia's best and creative hotels and restaurants.

Here too the visitors showed all their respect to the great work Isha Fofana has done to build up the place in just six month. After the official opening in February 2010 she is still improving the place as a unique location for art and culture - not just in The Gambia, but all over West Africa. Some guests being present have tried to express their feelings seeing the museum and the art, but the place left them speechless. Especially the mixture in-between her modern art and many traditional old exhibits has touched the visitors being around during the filming.
The film will show also a workshop Isha Fofana is doing to train young girls some skills like batik and to give them some creative ideas to produce different works. The workshops should train the girls to get at the end an income of their own.
During the last shooting she was painting a new artwork and expressing all her feelings and hopes and expectations to the film crew - and they recorded it on tape. Her deepest feeling - like she has told during the interview - is her hope that the African culture will not fade out and that she will fight for it till the end of her life.

Isha Fofana, the founder, falls into tears of joy. The highlight was the official opening of "Mama Africa - women's museum and art center" in The Gambia.
"Mama Africa" is the newest museum in the network of women's museums around the world. It focuses on the presentation of everyday life of women in West Africa and also provides both traditional and contemporary art. The Founder, Isha Fofana, herself a painter, has earned during her time in Europe a good reputation. She has had e.g. exhibitions with UNESCO, the UN and the EU. Almost two years ago, she returned to her homeland to help with her experience - especially the girls and women. She also wanted to fulfil her dream: "Mama Africa". This dream came now true.
150 guests got together in the shady art garden: Official representatives from relevant ministries, women's offices, the tourism industry, the diplomatic corps, artists, friends and relatives. The representatives of arts and culture paid tribute to the work of Isha and they were pleased that she has finally created a great place in The Gambia to exhibit her art - including the works of other artists. The Minister for Tourism and Culture, Fatou Mass Jobe Njie, has emphasized the importance of arts and culture for the development of the country. She spokes in behalf of Her Excellency, Aja Isatou Njie-Saidy, the Vice-President of The Gambia and Minister of Women's Affairs. "Mama Africa" is a milestone and her ministry would work out together with Isha Fofana a concept how to place art and culture at the heart of the tourist activities.

Therefore another investment of 15.000 to 20.000 Euros is needed to implement a Hybrid Wind-Solar Energy System, an investment her budget cannot stand at the moment.

Isha Fofana
Isha is dedicated to encouraging original art work from all who participate. She wants people's talents to develop individually with less reliance on copying other people's successful styles.
She feels that this is especially important for our young Gambian female artists, who seem to lack the imagination and courage needed to be truly original as well as the opportunities to break away from their domestic commitments.
She is known internationally and has worked and exhibited in Europe and Asia. She has now returned to her homeland to fulfil her dream of bringing art to the Gambian people and to share her energy with others.
Isha Fofana - Mama Africa
Mama Africa is back!
Isha Fofana, a renowned artist from the Gambia, has returned home after almost ten years and an international career. During her time in Europe she has had e.g. exhibitions at the UNESCO music award given to Youssou N ' Dour/Senegal and Oumou Sangaré/Mali. Her gallery in Germany was a cultural centre for people being interested in arts and culture from all over Africa. After an audience at the Vice President of The Gambia, Isha Fofana decided to return home and to help her country in her field.
The art scene in Europe is enthusiastic about her work: "A picturesque explosion at once started Isha Fofana her suppressed thoughts, dreams and feelings … Behind many pictures Isha Fofanas personal stories, events, descriptions of a world little accessible to us, hide. The artist dares to process a far tension bend artistically from old black African traditions up to a new formal liberty in the open, all visual codes permissible western world. … Isha Fofana doesn't mix these polarities to a pleasant "Ethno pop". Her instinctive esthetical certainty to reach an increase making sensorial in her intense painting air and colour areas contrasting strongly into her great is also fascinating. …" Dr. Adam Öllers, director of the museums in Aachen/Germany
