Isabel Hayward, administrative director of the St. Joseph's Health Centre emergency department, said the majority of patients are offloaded to St. Joe's within 10 minutes, with 50 per cent completed within five minutes. During peak season, from Dec. 20 to Jan. 3, the process took 30 minutes for 20 of 262 patients. Offloading delays can usually be attributed to patient volumes, said Hayward. Hayward said the call tells hospital staff what to prepare for and gives them time to reorganize. She said some fine points regarding the phone-in process have to be fine-tuned before rolling out the program across the city.
