Dr. Horton completed his undergraduate degree in Chemistry from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1979.
After receiving a Doctorate degree in Chemistry from Indiana University, he began his career as a Drug Designer for the Dupont Company in 1984.
No drugs had been designed in the world at that time.

As a national director of the National Organization of Black Chemist and Chemical Engineers, Dr. Horton created a mentorship program for intercity youth.

Dr. Horton presently serves on the Board of Visitors for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
He is currently a member of the first best practice committee where he chaired one of two subcommittees responsible for selecting the schools to benchmark and gather information.
Dr. Horton has served on the Board of Directors of Shaw University for eight years.
He is a member of the finance committee. (Located in Raleigh, NC, Shaw University is the oldest historically black college of the south.
