David Hoggard's take on local politics and life in general from Greensboro, NC

I second David Wharton's opinion regarding former N&R editor Irwin Smallwood's idea on what to do with War Memorial Stadium as published in today's paper.
Smallwood is proposing to take a still useful and much-used stadium, and make of it a "useless monument" that its makers disavowed.

Irwin Smallwood Irwin Smallwood Irwin Smallwood Irwin Smallwood spent nearly a half a century as a writer and editor for the Greensboro News & Record, working in both the sports and news departments. Smallwood held the titles of Managing Editor and Executive Sports Editor along the way. His passion was golf writing, however, and for three consecutive years in the 1960s Smallwood won first place in the news division of the national golf writing competition. Smallwood also won numerous writing awards on the state and regional levels. Smallwood chaired the Greater Greensboro Open's 50th anniversary celebration in 1988, and in 1999 Smallwood was named Honorary Chairman of the tournament. The media center for the Wyndham Championship was named in honor of Smallwood. Smallwood is a member of the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame, the Carolinas Golf Hall of Fame and the North Carolina Journalism Hall of Fame. Irwin Smallwood

Longtime Greensboro Sports Council member Irwin Smallwood is this year's TIMCO Invitational Honorary Chairman.
Smallwood spent nearly a half century as a writer and editor of the Greensboro News & Record working in both the news and sports departments. He was at Sedgefield Country Club in 1953 when the Atlantic Coast Conference was created and has been a part of the Greensboro sports landscape for decades. Smallwood pioneered golf writing in North Carolina, but he did not limit himself to PGA TOUR events. He had equal enthusiasm for covering junior tournaments, city amateurs, state amateurs and other events. In 2004, the media center at the Wyndham Championship was named in his honor. He is a member of the Guilford County Hall of Fame, the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame, the Carolinas Golf Hall of Fame and the North Carolina Journalism Hall of Fame.
