Irene Trejo, 67, beloved sister, aunt and mentor to many young men and women, died Thursday, July 27 at Del Sol Hospital.She was preceded in death by her parents, Candelario Trejo and Genoveva Macias Trejo, and is survived by sisters, Ana Maria Zubiate and husband Fernando Zubiate, Carmen T. Delgado, Maria Elena Jaquez, brother Candelario "Larry" Trejo, Jr. and wife Gloria, eleven nieces, nephews, grand and great-grand nieces and nephews.A life long resident of El Paso, she was an administrator/teacher for 38 years in the El Paso ISD at Alta Vista, Wainwright and Zavala elementary schools.She also served as Director of Head Start for EPISD and El Paso County.She was a graduate of Austin High School, Texas Western College and the University of Utah.After high school, she defied tradition by becoming a teacher.Her motto "you have to believe in yourself" drove her career and life.Many of her ex staff still cite her as a strong female role model and mentor.As principal at Zavala Elementary School, she rallied her instructional team to achieve Recognized status for the school, the first EPISD school south of I-10 to achieve that honor.But it was her love of her students that was most evident.If you passed by the school early on school days you would see her and her custodians scouring the grounds for
