Chief Ian Moffett
IAN A. MOFFETT
Chief Ian A. Moffett was born in Georgetown, Guyana which is the only English speaking country in South America.
At the age of six, he
migrated to Toronto, Canada with his
parents and sister.
In 1985, Chief Moffett then migrated to Miami, Florida with his family.
Chief Moffett is currently employed by the Miami-Dade School Board as the Chief of Police and District Security for the Miami-Dade Schools Police Department.
has over 20 years of law enforcement experience and possesses a Master's of Science Degree from the University of Cincinnati and a Bachelors of Science Degree in Criminal Justice from Florida International University.
He is also a graduate of the prestigious University of Louisville, Southern Police Institute Command Officers Development Course and is a proud graduate of Miami Southridge Senior High School.
Chief Moffett has worked and trained with multi-agencies regarding responding to critical incidents and has given countless workshops in the areas of youth violence, gang awareness, school safety, weapons of mass destruction, emergency management and tactical training.
He is currently a certified instructor and holds a specialty in firearms through the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
Chief Moffett is also an online faculty instructor for the University of Phoenix and teaches Critical Incident Management and Concepts of Physical Facility Security and Personal Protection to graduate level students.
He is currently a member of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, Region 7 Domestic Security Task Force.
Chief Moffett also serves on several school safety and juvenile boards within the South Florida community.
He is currently the Vice President for the National Association of School Safety and Law Enforcement Officials (NASSLEO) and a Subject Matter Expert for the United States Department of Education on issues related to emergency management in schools.
Previously, Chief Moffett was a Police Major with the Miami Police Department and was responsible for the Training & Personnel Development Section.
The Training & Personnel Development Section
is comprised of 40 personnel consisting of lieutenants, sergeants, officers and civilian staff.
He was also designated as Training Center Director for the Miami Police Training Center, which was comprised of the Police Academy Class (PAC), which trained and certified entry-level police officers from the City of Miami, surrounding jurisdictions and independent recruits; the School for Professional Development, which provided specialized training for City of Miami police officers and law enforcement personnel from around the region and other parts of the United States; the International Policing Institute, which focused on police management training for the Latin American and Caribbean regions and international countries.
was responsible for managing 100 police recruits and over 200 police instructors on an annual basis.
Chief Moffett served as the chairman of the Florida Criminal Justice Training Center Directors Association which represented all 40 certified training centers throughout the state.
Chief Moffett was also previously employed with Miami-Dade Schools Police Department for over 15 years.
He held the position of Police Captain and commanded the Central Operations Section of the schools police department, managing over 120 schools and district sites.
He was a member of the schools police District's Critical Incident Response Team (DCIRT), that oversees 40 officers and civilian staff.
He also previously managed the schools police department's administrative section and was primarily responsible for the budget, training, accreditation and grants.
He was assigned to the Investigative Division as a Police Lieutenant and Detective Sergeant conducting internal affairs investigations on civilian employees and criminal follow up investigations.
He helped open the District's Office of the Inspector General and served as the Assistant to the Inspector General for six months.
He was a School Resource Officer at a middle and high school for a three year period.
Ian A. Moffett started his law enforcement career with the Florida Department of Corrections as a Correctional Officer and served in the United States Army as an Infantryman where he participated in a Rapid Deployment Unit.
In total, he
has given over 24 years of government service at the national, state, and local levels.
