Wilderness Safaris - Luxury African Safaris & Lodges
Safaris / Guides / Specialist Guides / Ian Davidson
Ian Davidson was born in Johannesburg sometime midway through the last century.
Apart from a few years spent training as an entomologist in the Natural History Museum in London, he has lived in South Africa.
After returning to South Africa he worked as an entomologist with the South African Institute for Medical Research.
During this time he
carried out research in Namibia which culminated in the conferring of a Masters degree in Medical Entomology with distinction.
Shortly thereafter he decided to pursue an interest closer to his heart - a more commercial career that involved travelling and something that would satisfy his diversifying interests in the natural history fields a well as in travel.
So, in 1988 he joined Wilderness Safaris, then a small fledgling Johannesburg operation.
eight years coordinating their special interest tours division, included itinerary planning, costing and reservations.
also doubled as their computer network trouble-shooter, and travelled fairly extensively as a specialist birder and natural history guide.
During this time he had the opportunity to lead groups into Botswana and Malawi, a central African country open to South Africans at the time, but later ventured into Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Ethiopia, Gabon and Cameroon in West Africa.
Since 1995 he
has been operating as a freelance guide and to date has now completed over a hundred tours in Africa.
Africa is his
main area of expertise, but he
has travelled extensively in search of birds in the USA, South America, Europe, and the Middle East.
primary interest is birds, he
has extensive knowledge in the entomological, botanical and general zoological fields and has written over 40 scientific papers on entomological and bird-related subjects.
