Pittsburgh attorney Howard J. Schulberg is elected president of the Allegheny County Bar Association
Championing diversity and gender equality efforts and promoting legal education programs for the public are among new president's top priorities Howard J. Schulberg
Pittsburgh Pennsylvania - June 20, 2011. Officers of the Allegheny County Bar Association today announced that Pittsburgh attorney Howard J. Schulberg has been elected its president for the year beginning July 1, 2011. The traditional passing of the gavel ceremony occurred during the association's annual conference on June 17.
Schulberg is a partner at Goehring, Rutter & Boehm in its Litigation Group. The primary focus of his litigation practice includes municipal law, personal injury, civil rights and alternative dispute resolution. He has been a board member of several non-profit organizations, including Pittsburgh Filmmakers and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

Schulberg, a member of the Allegheny County Bar Association since 1979, has held numerous leadership positions with the association, including serving as Chair of the Judiciary Committee, two terms on the Board of Governors, and as Secretary of the Board. He also has chaired the John H. Sorg Fund and Legislative Committee and served on the Grant Committee of the Allegheny County Bar Foundation.
Schulberg said that under his leadership there will be continuing efforts to move the association's diversity and gender equality programs forward. "In fact, we want to ensure that these initiatives become hallmarks not only locally but nationally," he said. "Although we were the first bar association to have an Institute for Gender Equality, we also want to be the first bar association to have long-term successes in diversity and gender equality improvement. These efforts are critical to the success of our organization and legal profession and especially to the communities we serve."
Through his associations with several local school districts, Schulberg understands the benefits that come from excellent education. Therefore, publicizing the free legal education programs that the bar association offers will be a priority.
"Statistics show that seven out of ten households may need a lawyer this year, but only half of those seven households will seek one out because they don't know where to turn," said Schulberg. "The bar association has excellent free legal education programs and a Lawyer Referral Service. Our Divisions and Committees, including our Homer S. Brown Division, offer street clinics and other outreach programs. We want to ensure that our residents know that they can turn to us to get answers to their legal questions or to be pointed in the right direction for assistance."
Schulberg also wants to promote the bar association's Code of Professionalism to its members to ensure that "our attorneys understand how important civility and professionalism is to the practice of law and how it can enrich our lives outside the practice. Schulberg is a 1976 graduate of the Pennsylvania State University, and he earned his J.D. from Duquesne University School of Law in 1979.
