Howard Elias Emigrates to EMC
Hopkinton, Massachusetts, USA 9 October 2003--Less than a month ago, Howard Elias, senior VP of Business Operations and Management for HP's Enterprise Systems Group, quietly resigned from HP. Howard's whereabouts was unknown until yesterday, when well-known information storage vendor EMC Corporation announced that Mr. Elias has joined the company as Executive Vice President of New Ventures. In his new role, Mr. Elias will manage emerging business initiatives, including EMC's Centera content addressed storage (CAS) operations, and help identify new growth opportunities in information lifecycle management. Elias will report to Joe Tucci, EMC's President and CEO.
Howard is a recognized leader throughout the IT industry and brings a wealth of experience that will help EMC deliver on our vision of becoming the ultimate information lifecycle management company."
Been There, Done That
The 46-year-old Elias has held a variety of senior management positions at HP, Compaq, DEC, AST Research, and Tandy Corporation. Prior to his brief stint as senior VP of Business Management and Operations for the ESG, Howard served as HP's senior VP and general manager of Network Storage Solutions. Prior to the acquisition of Compaq by HP in May 2002, Howard spent a year as senior VP and general manager of Compaq's Business Critical Server Group, and three years as VP and general manager of the company's Storage Products Division. During Mr. Elias' tenure, Compaq became a leader in midrange storage systems with its StorageWorks product line, and introduced the ENSA (Enterprise Network Storage Architecture) strategy and initial product set. At Digital, Howard held a number of senior business and product management positions, including VP of DEC's PC business, and VP of the firm's Windows NT initiative.
Elias left HP to "pursue other opportunities," a company spokesperson said. Mr. Elias told The Wall Street Journal he left voluntarily to consider jobs elsewhere. The HP spokesperson said the company doesn't plan to replace Mr. Elias, and is reassigning his planning and strategy duties among existing members of the management team.
While the presence of Mr. Elias at EMC won't help HP's storage business, the recent departure of senior executives from HP is not unexpected, given the firm's reorganization earlier this year, as well as a disappointing 3FQ03 financial report card.
