In a petition filed before the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB), Homer Mercado, of the Southern Luzon Bus Operators Association (SOLUBOA), justified the need for a fare hike by citing profit losses due to the toll rate increase implemented along SLEx from Alabang in Muntinlupa City to Sto.
Tomas in Batangas province.
said that implementation of the number-coding scheme on buses in Metro Manila, a minimum wage increase of P17 for implementation in Region 4(Southern Tagalog), and price increases in diesel and vehicle spare parts have contributed to the rise in the cost of operating provincial buses servicing routes to Southern Luzon.
"We ask our passengers to understand that we have no more recourse but to ask for a fare increase to mitigate our losses and maintain our cost of operations.
We have done our best to oppose the toll hike, but the government still allowed the increase to push through," he
admitted that it will take some time for the petition for fare increase to be resolved, so his
group ise asking the board to allow SOLUBOA members to implement a 30-centavo provisional increase while the hearing of the petition is pending.
