April 12 saw the passing of an Atlanta traffic icon, WSB Radio and Television's Captain Herb Emory. Emory died of a heart attack in front of his house after tending to injured in a crash and then directing traffic around it. His impact on Atlanta traffic is hard to properly describe. He had relationships with public officials like no other. He oversaw the development of dozens of traffic reporters, including myself. He worked harder than any reporter to serve the public - reporting news and traffic in Atlanta for over 40 years. His methodology and passion are a charge we are left to keep.

ATLANTA (AP) -- A public memorial service is planned for Saturday to celebrate the life of longtime WSB Radio and WSB-TV traffic reporter "Captain" Herb Emory.
WSB-TV reports ( that the public memorial is planned for 10 a.m. Saturday at Johnson Ferry Baptist Church in east Cobb County.
Emory was helping at the scene of a car crash in Douglas County when he had a heart attack.
The 61-year-old Emory spent many hours a week in a helicopter hovering over Atlanta's infamous traffic jams, offering words of support and empathy to frustrated drivers.
He had served as an Atlanta traffic reporter since 1971 and had been with WSB Radio and WSB-TV since 1991.
He was inducted into the Georgia Radio Hall of Fame in 2008.

When Scott Slade left the WSB Skycopter to anchor Atlanta's Morning News in 1991, Herb stepped in to the Skycopter and has been there ever since heading the WSB Traffic team with reports every six minutes in the mornings and back with team coverage every afternoon.
Herb also hosts weekend auto racing shows and supplies special coverage of the NASCAR races at Atlanta Morot Speedway.Every Christmas by the way, he is Santa on the radio as children call in to speak to the jolly old elf.

During this year's Taste of Douglasville many young people performed on the O'Neal Plaza Stage and the Safari Stage near the Old Courthouse; Captain Herb Emory, Mark Arnold, Judge Peggy Walker and Sargeant Traci Sullivan served as masters of ceremonies.
