Henry Choo | Lyric Coloratura Tenor

One of Australia's finest lyric coloratura tenors, and under new artistic management, Henry Choo was born abroad but raised and schooled in the cultural city of Melbourne. Originally trained as a pianist and violinist, Henry achieved an Associate Diploma in Singing under the tutelage of Noel Ancell OAM. He furthered his vocal and operatic studies at the Melba Conservatorium of Music and the Australian National Academy of Music, and with the late French repertoire specialist and vocal educator Susan Falk.
He is an alumnus of both the Young Artist Program of Opera Queensland and the Moffatt Oxenbould Young Artist Development Program of Australia's national opera company, Opera Australia.
Henry made his career debut in the role of Ernesto in Opera Queensland's production of Don Pasquale, and his principal debut with Opera Australia as the Italian Singer in Der Rosenkavalier.

On a more traditional front, Henry has performed soloist in many oratorio and symphonic works including Mahler's Symphony No. 8, Mozart's Requiem, Händel's Messiah, Beethoven's Symphony No. 9, Bach's St John Passion, St Matthew Passion and Christmas Oratorio, and Mendelssohn's Elijah to name but a few. He has performed recitals for various organisations including the National Gallery of Victoria, Opera Society of Victoria, The Australian Robert Stolz Society and The Lieder Society of Victoria.
2014 saw Henry perform the role of Cassio in Otello for West Australian Opera, Martin in The Tender Land for Lyric Opera of Melbourne, Sailor/Shepherd in Tristan Und Isolde (concert version) for Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, and the premiere performance of An Australian War Requiem by Christopher Bowen OAM in commemoration of the centenary of WWI.

2015 has already seen Henry perform the role of Lord Riccardo Percy in Anna Bolena, a tudor opera by Donizetti, presented by OperaBox (Western Australia) that has not been previously performed in Australia for 140 years.

A former member of the Australian Boys Choir, Henry Choo attained an Associate Diploma in Singing in 1997 under the guidance of Noel Ancell, and furthered his vocal and performance studies at the Melba Conservatorium of Music and the Australian National Academy of Music.  He is now one of Australasia's most outstanding and popular tenors.
A member of Opera Australia's Moffatt Oxenbould Young Artist Development Program for 2005 and 2006, and former Young Artist of Opera Queensland (2003-2004), Henry made his career debut in the role of Ernesto in Opera Queensland's production ofDon Pasquale, and made his principal debut with Opera Australia as the Italian Singer in Der Rosenkavalier.
Since then, he has sung many leading roles for the national company: Tamino in The Magic Flute, Acis in Acis and Galatea, Almaviva in Il barbiere di Siviglia, Ferrando in Così fan tutte, Rinuccio in Gianni Schicchi, Oronte in Alcina, Nadir in The Pearlfishers, Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni, The Defendant in Trial by Jury, the Herald in Rinaldo, Benvolio in Roméo et Juliette.  For State Opera of South Australia, he has sung Almaviva and appeared inRigoletto for the Macau International Music Festival.
Henry has been engaged as soloist in many concert works including Mozart'sRequiem, Handel'sMessiah, Bach's St John Passion and Rossini'sPetite Messe Solemnelle. He performed Bach's Cantata No. 207 with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra andthe Evangelist in Bach's Christmas Oratorio with Bach Musica, Auckland.  He has been a frequent guest artist with the Queensland, Adelaide and Tasmanian Symphony Orchestras, Sydney Philharmonia and The Australia Ensemble.
In 2010, Henry performed Aldo/Nigel in Bliss in Sydney, Melbourne and at the Edinburgh Festival, The Italian Singer in Der Rosenkavalier and Lysander in A Midsummer Night's Dream for Opera Australia.  For the national company in 2011, he sang Almaviva, Nadir, Don Ottavio and Camille in a new production of The Merry Widow.
In 2012, Henry Choo will sing Nadir in The Pearlfishers and Camille in The Merry Widow for Opera Australia, Nadir for West Australian Opera and will take the tenor solos in Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra.
