AAUW (American Association of University Women) of Escanaba salutes member, Helmi Lepisto, of Rock. Helmi will leave for the Bahamas at the end of January to start a school for the deaf as part of Christian Missions for the Deaf. ollowing graduation from Eastern Michigan University in 1954, Helmi taught at the School for the Deaf in Flint, MI. and in public schools in the Upper Peninsula. She also worked as a Bay Cliff Health Camp counselor in the summers. he retired from teaching in 1991. Helmi serves on the State Board for the Michigan Association of the Deaf. Helmi, a lifelong learner and leader, exemplifies AAUW's Mission of "advancing equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, and research" and promotes AAUW's Value Promise of "belonging to a community that breaks through educational and economic barriers so that all women have a fair chance."

ROCK - American Association of University Women (AAUW) of Escanaba salutes member Helmi Lepisto of Rock. Lepisto ventured to the Bahamas at the end of January to start a school for the deaf as part of Christian Missions for the Deaf.

Following graduation from Eastern Michigan University in 1954, Lepisto taught at the School for the Deaf in Flint and in public schools in the Upper Peninsula.
During summer months, Lepisto also found time in her scheduled to work as a Bay Cliff Health Camp counselor.
Lepisto retired from teaching in 1991. She currently serves on the State Board for the Michigan Association of the Deaf.

Helmi (Bakka) Lepisto of Rock from the Class of 1946, registers Rock High School alumni during the all-class reunion held at the Danforth Place in Escanaba on Sept. 2. Lepisto was an elementary teacher at Rock since 1962 and retired from Mid Peninsula in 1991. She taught kindergarten during most of her career.
