ROCK - American Association of University Women (AAUW) of Escanaba salutes member Helmi Lepisto of Rock.
ventured to the Bahamas at the end of January to start a school for the deaf as part of Christian Missions for the Deaf.
Following graduation from Eastern Michigan University in 1954, Lepisto taught at the School for the Deaf in Flint and in public schools in the Upper Peninsula.
During summer months, Lepisto
also found time in her
scheduled to work as a Bay Cliff Health Camp counselor.
Lepisto retired from teaching in 1991.
She currently serves on the State Board for the Michigan Association of the Deaf.
