Helen RegenstreifWITVA: Helen Regenstreif, Copper Enamels and Sumi-EHelen Regenstreif and her One of a Kind Sumi-E CardsHelen RegenstreifHelen Regenstreif was born in Brooklyn, NY and even as a youngster she showed promise in art.Her mother would always talk about the lifelike drawings she did at the age of seven.For many years she was a high school art teacher and expanded her various artistic abilities by also teaching calligraphy to adult and handicapped classes. In 1972 Helen turned to other art forms and first started to produce copper enamel.In 1982, Helen began her studies of Sumi-E art with florals on rice paper.The art of Sumi-E was created in Japan and involves the use of watercolors and special Oriental brushes.Helen uses a variety of brushes to make different strokes.As her ability grew, she began to create beautiful notecards, with paintings on the front and a matching painting on the envelope.Each card is one of a kind and Helen has clients from all across the United States. Regenstreif having worked in many mediums, i.e, watercolor, oils, sculpture and for the last few years ena mel on copper, lately is expressing her love of form and color in Sumi-e-Japanese art form. Helen says "Much like calligraphy, or the art of beautiful writing, the philosophy of Sumi-e is a contrast and harmony of life, expressing simple beauty and elegance. Like nature's vitality in it's design and execution, Sumi-e aims to depict the spirit, rather than a semblance of object. TEACHING EXPERIENCE Helen C. Regenstreif was an art teacher at Sewanhaka High School on Long Island, NU for more than 16 years and taught Adult Education art classes at Olympic Heights High School in Boca Raton, FL.
