St. James' Church: Rockwell Fellow?

Craig and I agreed that Hays H. Rockwell, St. James' 14th Rector and later Bishop of Missouri, was just the right person to honor through this fellowship.
Hays was a mentor to me when I first came here as an Associate Rector, encouraging me in days when I questioned my call to parish ministry and encouraging me to take on and take up ministries that were, at first, daunting. For that alone, I am immensely grateful. But I am always grateful as well for his legacy to St. James', a legacy that continues in our commitment to share the love of Christ with each other, our city, and our world. Arriving as Rector in 1976, at the height of New York City's financial crisis, when many in our neighborhood were fleeing to the suburbs and many parishes turned in on themselves seeking to husband their own resources, Hays led this congregation into deeper ministries with and for those most in need. Partnerships were forged in the South Bronx that bore fruit in many ways, including Nehemiah Housing---a project that transformed blighted streets into a neighborhood of home. Hays was instrumental in founding the Neighborhood Coalition for Shelter, an organization that still works to help provide services and transitions into housing for those who are homeless. And it was during his tenure that both the Tuesday lunch and Friday dinner programs were inaugurated. It was through Hays' leadership and gift for friendship that the parish established lasting relationships with the Church in South Africa and Northern Ireland. Hays befriended then-Bishop Desmond Tutu, and out of that friendship grew a parish-wide commitment to the work of dismantling apartheid while establishing educational programs to help raise up new leadership for that nation. Hays Rockwell's ministry among us testified to his trust in the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and his lived conviction that its grace and power can transform lives and the life of the world.

St. James' Church: The Rockwell Center

Rev. Hays Rockwell
hays_hamilton_rockwell.jpg The Center is named for the fourteenth Rector of St. James' (1976-1990) and retired Bishop of Missouri. Bishop Rockwell came to St. James' after serving as chaplain at St. George's School, chaplain at the University of Rochester, and dean of Bexley Hall (an Episcopal seminary). In 1991 he was consecrated Bishop Coadjutor (designated to succeed the diocesan bishop upon his/her retirement) of Missouri, and he served as diocesan from 1993 to 2002. The Center is named for Bishop Rockwell because of a legacy, both here and as bishop, of developing new clergy for the church. St. James' Rector, the Rev. Brenda Husson, described his impact on her: "Hays was a mentor to me when I first came here as an Associate Rector, encouraging me in days when I questioned my call to parish ministry and encouraging me to take on and take up ministries that were, at first, daunting.
