NORWALK >> Hasmik Danielian, Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School Districts newest superintendent, has mixed memories of Iran, the country where she was born.
Iran was the country where Danielian
, 60, of Glendale, who will take over as superintendent on July 1, fled with her
husband and son, after the revolution that deposed the Shah.
It was making life miserable, she
said of the revolution.
Khomeini was coming.
Its also the country where Danielian
wanted to become a teacher.
I always knew I wanted to be a teacher, she said.
I used to take the neighborhood kids and teach them.
She received a bachelors degree in English language and literature from the then-National University of Iran.
When Danielian came to the United States, she went back to school, receiving a masters degree in bilingual education from the University of La Verne and her teaching credential.
She later received a second masters degree from Point Loma Nazarene University and a doctorate in educational leadership from the University of Southern California.
She became a teacher and later a high school principal in the Glendale Unified School District, assistant superintendent of secondary schools at Hacienda La Puente Unified and then superintendent at Brawley Union High School District.
now succeeds Ruth Perez, who resigned in September to become deputy superintendent for Los Angeles Unified School District
said shes not worried about the change because she
had always worked in large districts before going to Brawley.
To me, it was a more difficult transition, going from large to small, she
knows there will be challenges at Norwalk-La Mirada.
The biggest challenge is implementing the common core state standards, she
Thats a challenge everywhere, not just in Norwalk, Danielian
As long as we implement the best practices and work as a team, we can do it.
and her husband, Arsen, an attorney, have two children and two grandchildren.
