The invitation was issued by Harvey Treger
of Evanston, founder of the North Shore Chamber Orchestra
and a cellist with the community ensemble. "Gary and I are both on the board of the Cello Society," Treger explained, adding, "though it doesn't meet very often."
had occasion to hear Stucka play last winter when the Evanston Music Club
celebrated its 100th anniversary with a concert in Lutkin Hall, featuring some of the club's outstanding scholarship winners.
"We played for the opening of the new library, too," Treger
recalled. Since 1985 the volunteer ensemble has played at Alice Millar Chapel in a unique collaboration with Northwestern University's School of Music.
"Northwestern's director of orchestras Victor Yampolsky
helped us," Treger
engaged Stucka as a soloist last May.
"I was delighted when he
plays with a lot of emotion." He
paused, and then added, "Yes, he
is a Romantic.Very much so."
