Harold Dates, chief humane agent and CEO of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, said a passerby saw the dog "in dire straits" in a car parked in a garage on Stetson Street.

A police officer broke out the car's window, Dates said, and an SPCA officer put the animal in his air-conditioned van. It died right about when it was taken from the car, Dates said.
A dog's normal temperature is about 101 degrees; because its temperature was so high, Dates said, it appears the animal died of heat stroke.
The owner was cited for negligence under Ohio's animal cruelty law, a second-degree misdemeanor. Dates didn't give the owner's name but said the first court date is Oct. 21.
