Wins National Cheese Institute's Laureate Award
(Naples, Fla., January 19, 1999) The National Cheese Institute (NCI) yesterday honored Hans Epprecht, president of Great Lakes Cheese, Hiram, Ohio, with the NCI Laureate Award -- the association's highest honor.
Epprecht came to the United States from Switzerland in 1948, earned his citizenship and served in the U.S. Army in the Korean War.
After the war, he began his career at Brewster Cheese in Ohio.

own company, Great Lakes Cheese
The company was originally located in the Cleveland Food Terminal, and sold only bulk sizes of cheese.
By 1963, the three-man operation had moved to Newbury, Ohio, where Epprecht
led their effort to begin packaging consumer sizes.
In 1984, Epprecht
became directly involved in cheesemaking with the purchase of a manufacturing plant in Adams, N.Y. In the years to follow, Great Lakes
acquired two more manufacturing facilities.

Epprecht serves on the board of the National Cheese Institute, and also serves on the Advisory Board for the Northeast Dairy Foods Research Center at Cornell University.
