Dr. Brooks
"I've been caring for women with breast cancer and other conditions for more than 15 years and know that a woman fighting cancer needs a physician who's experienced, committed to finding the best treatment option and a true partner on her journey," says Dr. Brooks. "Patients can count on me to listen, to provide clear, understandable information, to explore both surgical and nonsurgical alternatives and to always be reachable. I tell my patients: There's the cancer, and then there's you … don't let the cancer define you."Dr. Brooks comes to SLCH from Queens-Long Island Medical Group, where she was attending breast and general surgeon and on the clinical faculty of North Shore-Long Island Jewish Hospital. Prior to joining the multispecialty practice, Dr. Brooks was Director of Breast Surgery Services at North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System in Forest Hills and was Chair of the American Cancer Society's Breast Cancer Task Force in Queens. After earning her medical degree at Albany Medical College, Dr. Brooks did research in tumor immunology at New York Hospital and Sloan Kettering Institute. The work she was involved in at these Institutions -- developing monoclonal antibodies detecting tumor antigens -- was patented, and instrumental in the evolution of such current treatments as Herceptin.
Dr. Brooks completed her residency in general surgery at Albert Einstein/Montefiore Medical Center and has practiced breast and general surgery for nearly 15 years. She is board-certified in General Surgery, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the American Society of Breast Surgeons and the New York Metropolitan Breast Group. Her professional interests include development of physician and patient education programs, participation in breast cancer clinical studies and the advancement of medical and surgical knowledge in local and online communities.
"A cancer diagnosis is not one size fits all," says Dr. Brooks. "I'm committed to finding the best treatment for each patient … surgery is not always the right choice … we have a lot of options available. She adds, "I'm excited about joining the SLCH team and working with primary care physicians, oncologists and the entire medical staff to provide the best possible care to our community. Dr. Brooks performs both minimally invasive and radical breast cancer surgery, counsels patients regarding genetic counseling for breast cancer and is committed to educating our community about early detection. "Cancer today is not what it was even five years ago," notes Dr. Brooks.
Bringing this highly regarded New York City breast surgeon to our community reflects SLCH's commitment to make progressive, cutting-edge cancer care available in the mid-Hudson Valley. "When you meet Hannah Brooks, her passion for caring for women with breast cancer is immediately evident," said Allan E. Atzrott, SLCH President and CEO.
...
