Biography

Hank Riehl is truly a pioneer in Human Capital Management. From the late 70s through early 90s Riehl focused on Talent Management with Sales, Marketing and Operations stints in the (for profit) Customer Education uunits at Data General, Digital Equipment and Oracle. Riehl frequently performed formal studies of clients' organizations to identify existing skill sets and create large-scale training programs that would migrate staff to desired (new) skill sets. During this period, Riehl developed and refined his competency-based approach to defining skill gaps and learning solutions starting with index cards and then migrating to self-designed PC-based tools. By the early 90s, Riehl became convinced that advances in client-server and database software technology would now permit deployment of his competency-based techniques in a self-service enterprise software application. In 1994 Riehl founded SkillView Technologies Inc. and in 1995 they brought to market SkillView, an enterprise-class application based on Riehl’s Competency Management concepts. In addition to serving the needs of the learner by identifying skill gaps and learning solutions, SkillView also combined data for many employees providing strategic analyses to optimize returns on the enormous capital committed to staff salaries. Early 1999 saw the initial release of a completely re-architected SkillView, designed for browser-based (web-based) deployment. When acquired by SkillSoft in 2006, SkillView software was in its 6th major release and second major architecture, still providing a world-class Competency Management solution to the enterprise. SkillView has been used by some very prestigious organizations, including New York Life, US Navy, Federated Department Stores, Farmers Insurance, US Central Intelligence Agency, Allstate Insurance, Cummins Diesels, CitiBank, Citrix, Travelers Insurance, Wyeth-Ayerst and many others. Riehl has been a sought-after industry spokesman for Talent and Competency Management. His articles have appeared in CIO Magazine Canada, HR Magazine, Channel Magazine, Boston Business Journal, and others. He has spoken at many conferences, including the annual SIM (Society for Information Management) conference, Comdex Canada, Comdex (Spring) Chicago, Technical Performance Management, Learning Technology, plus others; and of course SkillSoft’s Perspectives and CAFÉ conferences. Riehl has been profiled in InformationWeek and Mass High Tech, and his comments regarding Competency Management have appeared in Inside Technology Training, HR Executive, Computerworld, InfoWorld, PCWeek and DataBased Advisor. Riehl continues to lead SkillSoft's efforts in the Talent Management arena.
