Rev. Gusti Linnea Newquist joins Troy church
The Rev. Gusti Linnea Newquist was installed Sunday as pastor of First United Presbyterian Church of Troy. Rev. Gusti Linnea Newquist was installed as the churchs new head Sunday evening at an official service of installation. Held in the church at 1915 Fifth Ave. in downtown Troy, the ceremony was performed by Teaching Elder Donna Elia and Ruling Elder Sal Scecchitano. The services declaration of installation made Newquists new job 100 percent official, and offered parishioners a chance to meet their new pastor. Newquist began running services in May, taking over for interim pastor Rick Otty. Newquist thinks so, too. I was looking for a church to serve that was committed to social justice, that was open and affirming and that was looking for creative leadership, she said, and First United Presbyterian Church of Troy met those desires. A year since her initial interview, Newquist is excited to officially be part of the Collar City church. The congregations shared goals include celebrating who they are. My first goal is to celebrate and to get to know this community, Newquist said. I really always want to tailor my ministry to the local needs and not come in with a set agenda. Newquist will soon be no stranger to the ins and outs of downtown Troy. She believes in the benefit of walking the neighborhood as church leadership and becoming rooted and invested in the surrounding community. The churchs future also holds a continued commitment to mission and social justice, which Newquist will steer in new directions. First United Presbyterian Church of Troy is a More Light church that welcomes lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Christians. This church is a beautiful congregation that takes care of its people, Newquist said, adding that she has experienced it firsthand and hopes to extend that care in her time at the church. Newquist grew up in both Virginia and Alabama, and has lived all over the country since. She studied at Marshall University in West Virginia before beginning work at the Presbyterian National Offices in Kentucky, where she directed a national program for college students. She felt her calling toward seminary during this time, triggered by the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001. I wanted my life to be about interfaith peacemaking, Newquist said. I wanted to be part of peacemaking from a religious perspective. So, she went to Harvard Divinity School, where she studied alongside members of all types of religions. After co-pastoring in Arizona, Newquist comes most recently from an interim ministry at Madison Square Presbyterian Church in San Antonio, Texas.
