Longtime Lady Panthers hoops coach Robey resigns E-mailImageGuss RobeySince 1969, when he got his first head coaching position at Malvern, Guss Robey has given his all to basketball.Robey started coaching at Benton high school 12 years ago and for the past eight seasons has headed the Lady Panthers basketball team.On Thursday, Robey announced his resignation from coaching and teaching, citing he wanted to spend more time with his wife, four daughters and two grandchildren."I've been struggling with this for a while," Robey said."It's hard to do, but it was time to get off the fence.Nothing has changed , I still love Lady Panthers basketball , it has been such a big part of my life."Along with his coaching duties, Robey also taught chemistry, geology and astronomy at Benton."I consider myself fortunate to have been able to coach and teach for so long," he said."All of my years have been rewarding.Benton high school is a great place to work and they will continue to be successful.First of all after being involved in education all these years, there's going to be a void, but I want everyone to know that I sincerely appreciate the Lady Panthers and I love to teach, too."Robey, in a tearful meeting with the Lady Panthers, he told them of his plan."I just want them to know how much they've meant to me," he said. Robey coached the Lady Panthers to the first round of the 6A-State basketball tournament this season in the first season of 6A basketball.As of today, there was no word on a replace for Robey.

In the HSU record book, in spite of the way football offenses opened up during the past three decades, Guss Robey still ranks second or third in most of the receiving categories. After a two-year Vietnam War military hitch, he started a lengthy and widely traveled high school coaching and teaching career - Malvern, Hughes, Eudora, Waldron, Glen Rose, Benton.He has been a member of the Benton High School staff the past 10 years, and is about to start his seventh season as head coach of the basketball Lady Panthers.
