That's too bad, explained Gus Magann, owner of Vine Lore, a Utah wine brokerage.
Unlike many overly sweet wines, Madeira has a citrus finish "that makes you want to take another sip rather than be done with it."
Madeira also is a good wine to serve with fall meals, including Thanksgiving, Magann
Its caramel flavor goes well with strong cheeses, nuts and custard desserts, such as pumpkin and pecan pie.
It also pairs well with creamy soups.
Some aged Madeira can hold up to wild game and braised dishes.
And at the end of the day, sipping Madeira by a warm fire "nourishes the soul," said Magann
, "making it easy to understand why Madeira has such an incredible history."
